What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the use of sterile, hair-thin needles that are inserted into specific acupuncture points in the skin. The needles are then manipulated manually or through stimulation.

Acupuncture points are located along pathways called “meridians”, and the points are located near nerves. Researchers suggest that acupuncture needles inserted at these ports may block pain signals. It is also thought that acupuncture may release natural chemicals and stimulate neurotransmitters to reduce pain and regulate depressive mood.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

  • Modern acupuncture is largely a painless procedure

  • Some people may experience a little tingling
  • In general, acupuncture treatment is a very comfortable method

How does acupuncture help with pain?

Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce its own pain relieving chemicals called “endorphins”. These chemicals mimic morphine by attaching to opiate receptor sites found through the nervous system.

Endorphins help to block pathways that relay pain messages from the body to the brain, resulting in relief of pain, general relaxation and biochemical restoration of the body’s own internal regulation systems.

The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities, thereby reducing inflammation and promoting physical well-being.
